What Makes A Good Logo?

What is a logo? Is logo design really that important? Should I just get a generic one from Canva? What makes a good logo? This post is here to answer your questions.

WHAT IS A LOGO?

In a word, it is a symbolic visual representation of a business or brand. These logos were created at the height of the industrial revolution where businesses began to grow and become widely recognized for their products. Below is an image I found on Pinterest of the evolution of popular brands' logos:

The design of a logo usually coincided with art movements or design trends. Graphic designers are addicts of design and the best logos are designed with the help of one. These logo designs may seem simple but it is the simple details that can make a logo recognizable.

GENERIC VS DESIGNED

Should you just choose a generic logo from a template, say on Canva? Short answer? In my opinion, no. If you are going to be serious as a brand and stand out, you don't want to use iconography or imagery which can't be used repeatedly by others. The benefits of using a graphic designer to create your logo is their knowledge of color, typography, and iconography to create an impact. They will really personalize your logo to your brands so prepare to include brand design in your marketing budget and set up costs.
